The Relationship Between Metabolic Syndrome and Serum IL-15 Level in Children ABSTRACT Aim: Childhood obesity is an increasingly common public health problem worldwide. Metabolic syndrome is defined as the association of obesity, high blood pressure, impaired glucose tolerance and dyslipidemia. It is thought that IL-15 may have therapeutic potential for mutual regulation of adipose and muscle tissue, brown adipose tissue function, and insulin sensitivity. So IL-15 research holds promise for the treatment and prevention of obesity. We aimed to shed light on the relationship of IL-15 with obesity and metabolic syndrome in childhood, as well as to determine its relationship with cardiometabolic risk factors and to what extent it affects body composition. Method: In our study, a total of 70 patients with metabolic syndrome (MS), obese without MS and normal weight control group were examined in three groups. Demographic characteristics, anthropometric measurements, body composition analysis, clinical characteristics and laboratory parameters of the cases were compared with IL-15 level. Children with metabolic syndrome were determined according to IDF criteria. Body composition analysis was done by the Tanita method. Serum IL-15 levels were studied with the human IL-15 ELISA kit. In the statistical analysis of the data, the distribution of variables was measured by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. ANOVA (Tukey test), Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney U tests were used in the analysis of quantitative independent data. Chi-square test was used in the analysis of qualitative independent data. Spearman correlation analysis was used for correlation analysis. The level of significance was determined as p = 0.05. Results: A significant negative correlation was found between serum IL-15 level and weight, weight SDS, BMI, BMI SDS, waist circumference, body fat ratio, systolic blood pressure, insulin, HOMA-IR, total cholesterol, LDL, triglyceride, ALT and CRP values. A significant positive correlation was found between HDL and body lean mass ratio and IL-15 (p<0,05). In our study, although IL-15 level was found to be significantly higher in the control group than the other groups, there was no significant difference between obese patients with and without metabolic syndrome (p>0,05). However, when all groups were considered, IL-15 levels were found to be significantly lower in patients with insulin resistance, dyslipidemia and / or high blood pressure, which are among cardiometabolic risk factors (p<0,05). Conclusion: Our findings show that IL-15 plays a role in the regulation of body weight and body composition in children. IL-15 can be considered as a promising molecule in the prevention of obesity and cardiometabolic risk factors. However, more clinical trials in humans are required to better understand these effects.
