The mediator role of emotional dysregulation and perceived social support in the effect of childhood traumas on psychological resilience

In this study, the mediating role of emotional dysregulation and perceived social support in the effects of childhood traumas on psychological resilience were investigated. The research sample consists of 385 people between the ages of 18-65. Data collection tools used were Personal Information Form, Childhood Psychological Trauma Questionnaire, Resilience Scale for Adults, Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale-Brief Form, Multidimensional Perceived Social Support Scale and sociodemographic information form prepared by the researcher. Data collection tools were applied in the form of online questionnaires. Pearson Correlation Analysis, one-way ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis H test and Independent Groups t-Test were used to analyze the data. Research data were analyzed with SPSS 25 program. In order to determine the mediation effect in the research, the test developed by Sobel was applied and the confidence intervals were examined. PROCESS SPSS Macro software was used in the analysis of the mediating effect. According to the results of the analysis of the study, various levels of relationships were found between the variables of the study, which are childhood traumas, psychological resilience, emotional dysregulation, and perceived social support. Emotional dysregulation and perceived social support have a partial mediating role in the effects of childhood traumas on psychological resilience. It has been determined that the findings differ according to demographic variables such as gender, marital status, working condition, educational status, chronic illness, psychological discomfort, income status and being Covid-19. The interrelationships of the scales were discussed within the framework of the relevant literature in the study, and suggestions were given for future studies.
