Analysing the traffic accidents using geographical information technologies: Adana case study

Abstract (EN)

Number of deaths due to traffic accidents have first ranks in Turkey as well as all over the world. Traffic accidents cause the life and financial loss. Many studies have been conducted to reduce the number of traffic accidents all over the world and in Turkey. The factors causing the accidents were revealed through these studies, and preventive measures taken accordingly.This thesis examined the accidents in the city center of Adana. The regions with intense traffic accidents and accident black spots have been determined by using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Accident analysis was done using the data set obtained from police accident records provided by General Directorate of SecurityFatal and injury accidents in Adana city center were investigated with respect to type of accident, days of week, seasons, air temperature, vacation days and time period and it was determined whether these factors lead to the formation of black spot. The causes of accident at black spots were analysed within a GIS environment. Traffic accident analysis was done using traffic accident reports, additionally, accident density estimation was generated by using Kernel Density Estimation method.Keywords: Analysing The Traffic Accident, Adana, GIS, Kernel Density Estimation
