DEMATEL method research on the reasons and difficulties in obtaining geographical indications

Geographical indications, which are accepted as a global phenomenon today, can be expressed as a place name showing where a product is from. Products that are qualified with geographical indications, called local products, are important levers for regional development, as they are of high quality, well-known, and add value to their region and region. The prominence of products that have the ability to carry the past to the present and the geographical indication due to their contribution to economic development increases the importance of the subject. The main starting point of this study is the fact that there are not enough products with geographical indications, although there are numerous local products, especially in our country, in our age when the competition is getting more and more intense. The sample group of the thesis study consists of the employees of the institution/organization that makes geographical indication application or registration and the experts in the field who support these institutions/organizations. Purposive sampling method was used to determine the sample group. In the evaluation of the determined critical factors, a question form based on pairwise comparison was used. In the analysis of the data obtained in the research, the DEMATEL method, one of the multiple decision making techniques, was used with the help of the Excel program. As a result of the analysis, the relationship between each of the determined criteria was arranged according to the priority order in terms of the importance of their effects on each other. As a result of the evaluation among the five criteria determined for the reasons that lead to obtaining geographical indications, the criterion with a critical success factor was determined as 'contributing to tourism', and the criterion with a critical success factor among the six criteria determined for the difficulties in obtaining geographical indications was the criterion of 'lack of information'.
