The effect of the gains at the program of geography teaching on skill levels of mapping of the students

The aim of this study was to compare skill levels of mapping of students having aneducation in different grades of secondary education institutions by giving the definition ofmapping and mapping skills. In that way the relation between the skill levels of mapping ofthe students and the gains aiming at making students attain mapping skills that take place atthe programs of geography teaching would be presented.The method of scanning was used in the study in order to determine the skill levels ofmapping of the students having an education in different grades and branches of secondaryeducation institutions. An achievement test was applied as a data collection tool in the study.The assessment tool developed for the current study was applied to 900 students at the 9th,10th and 11th grades of six secondary education institutions (Gazi High School, YıldırımBeyazıt Anatolian High School, Gazi University Foundation Private High School, TEDIstanbul College, Kaynarca Şevket Sabancı High School and Istanbul High School) in thecities of Ankara and Istanbul in the educational year of 2007 ? 2008. One way varianceanalysis (One ? Way Anova) and t ? test were used in the solution of sub-problems of thestudy.Depending on the results of the study, while the skill levels of mapping of the studentshaving an education at the secondary education institutions had no significant differencebetween 9th and 10th grade, as a result of the evaluation of the values, it was found that theskill levels of mapping of the students attending to both 9th and 10th grade were higher thanthose of the ones attending to 11th grade. In addition, it was also found that the skill levels ofmapping of the students having an education at the branch of Turkish-Math and the branch ofMath at the secondary schools was higher than the ones having an education at the branch ofSocial Sciences and that the skill levels of mapping of the students at the branch of Math werehigher than those of the students at the branch of Turkish-Math.
