The effect mastery learning method on student success in teaching geography

m ABSTRACT In this research, an aim of identifying whether mastery learning method is effective on students' success in High school first grade in Geography I subject in the unit "The structure of Earth and the formation of geographical properties" was realized. In the research, experimental method was used. Experimental method was applied on 9. grades in Bünyan Anatolian High School, in the town Bünyan, Kayseri in 2003-2004 Educational year. Among classes, 9-B was appointed as the experiment group, 9-A was appointed as control group impartially. Experimental method is realized with 56 student, 28 ones from 9-A, 28 ones from 9-B. For the fact that the method works through the aims, the equality of subjects was considered. In the equality of subjects, it s given care for the equality of the number of students, the students exam results in Anatolian High Enterance exam, the seniority of the teachers who would apply the experiments, the size of classes and the conditions of heat and light. In the research, a model with the control group of pre-test and past-test was used. All of the 3 questions suggested were verified. A 40- question test which was made up of the topics of the unit applied, and of wich material analysis was done, was used as a mean of gathering data. In the analysis of data, double-sided variance analysis used to identify the validity of difference between two variables was used. As a result of statistical processes done in the analysis of double-sided variance analysis, these results were found: 1- There's a valid difference in favour of experiment group between the total marks of control and experiment group after pre-test and past-test marks at the test of the unit named "The structure of Earth and the formation of geographical properties".IV 2- There's a valid difference in favour of experiment group between avarage pretest-pasttest marks on the unit named "The structure of Earth and the formation of geographical properties". It will be useful to apply the research for different geography topics, in different learning levels in a wider period of time mastery learning method can be aplied not on Geography subject, but also all the other subjects.
