The examination of interactional behaviors of a hearing mother who has a child with profound hearing loss in the context of the parent guidance

The main purpose of this action research is to examine the interactional behavior of a mother having a child with profound hearing loss in the context of the parent guidance. The participants of the research are the child with a profound hearing loss, his mother and the teacher/researcher. The data were collected by the teacher/researcher with the video recordings of mother-child interaction in the context of parent guidance, audio recordings of interviews with the mother, audio recordings of review and trustworthiness meetings and reflective journals. Eight parent guidance sessions have been conducted in total. Inductive analyses were applied to ten minute parts of the mother-child interaction in the context of parent guidance sessions with the aim of examine the mother interactional behaviors. It has been determined to representative video recordings of mother-child interaction in the second, fourth, sixth and eighth parent guidance session with an aim to examine the changes interactional behavior of the mother. Parent guidance expert and action research expert that work in the field of education and researches of children with hearing loss provide the trustworthiness of this research. Parent guidance expert has followed all the preparation and implementation phases in the parent guidance practice and then developed solutions for the problems observed in the interactional behavior of the mother and practicing parent guidance. Action plans have been emerged as a result of the parent guidance expert evaluations and trustworthiness meetings. Teacher/researcher has planned and applied the next session according to this action plan. The data that has emerged as a result of this cycle has been interpreted in a critical manner in the framework of this cycle. The environment and implementation that has been created in parent guidance sessions takes its theoretical framework from the social interaction and socio-cultural historical development theories. Having said that, parent guidance implementations have been conducted basing upon the natural auditory/verbal approach and family centered approach suggested in the literature. Positive changes have been occurred in the interactional behavior of the mother due to the parent guidance sessions conducted in the action research where interactional behavior of mother has been examined in systematic and cyclical manner. It has been determined that while mother's interactional behaviors that support interactions gradually increased, the behaviors that negatively affect interactions reduced throughout the parent guidance sessions. This research carried out in the context of parent guidance sessions, is believed to contribute to the national and international laterature on mother-child interaction and parent guidance. Meanwhile, it may be beneficial for the early interventionists and researchers working in the field of parent guidance practice with children with hearing loss in Turkey.
