Selection of road pavement types with analytic network process (ANP) method, one of the multi-criteria decision making techniques

Transportation systems play a fundamental role in the economic, social and cultural development of modern societies. As one of the main components of transportation systems, road pavements are critical for transportation safety, comfort, efficiency and environmental sustainability. The correct selection and application of the type of pavement makes significant contributions to both the efficient use of public resources and the creation of long-lasting, environmentally friendly transportation systems. The determination of pavement types is a complex decision process that requires the simultaneous evaluation of multiple criteria. This study aims to determine the most suitable alternatives within the framework of different criteria by considering the application of the Analytic Network Process (ANP) method in the selection process of pavement types belonging to the 2nd and 3rd class road categories. In this context, Analytic Network Process (ANP), which is one of the multi-criteria decision-making methods that takes into account the dependency relationships between criteria, was used. Pairwise comparisons between criteria and alternatives were made in line with expert opinions, and the analysis was carried out using Super Decisions software. As a result of the analysis based on expert opinions, the alternative concrete road was determined to be the most appropriate option with a rate of %37,049 in the selection of pavement types. This study aims to provide a systematic and holistic evaluation approach to decision makers in the process of selecting the pavement type. The findings of the study will guide decision makers to make more informed, sustainable and effective decisions by considering various criteria in the selection of pavement type.
