Video game addiction and aggression in massively multiplayer online game players

Abstract (EN)

In recent years, communication and entertainment instruments of new media have become very popular. In this study, the particular genre of massively multiplayer online video games, which has an important place among these instruments, are examined through using concepts of social psychology: aggression and addiction. The main objective of this study was to discuss the relationship between aggression and online video game addiction levels of people who are playing massively multiplayer online video games with violent content. In addition, this study also intends to explore the correlation between aggression / video game addiction levels and age / gender variables.Study included 205 participants who are playing massively multiplayer online video games for over a year. Mean age range of the participants was 18±40. Data were collected via Turkish version of the ?Buss-Perry Aggression Scale (Demirtaş Madran, 2013) and ?Internet Addiction Scale (Günüç, 2009).Data were analyzed with SPSS 18 statistics software statistical analysis has indicated that there?s a significant positive correlation between participants? aggression levels and online video game addiction levels. On the other hand, study indicated that there?s no statistical significant correlation between aggression and addiction levels of male and female participants.Keywords: Massively multiplayer online game, aggression, addiction, video game addiction, online video game addiction.
