Teaching of polygons by using vee diagrams and mind maps to primary school 7 th class

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of ?Polygons? topic, which is included in mathematics curriculum of seventh grade, on the student success and permanence of the knowledge using Mind maps and Vee diagrams. In this study the pre-test and post-test with the control group were conducted.The research was done with control and experiment groups consisting of 39 seventh grade students who were randomly identified using pre-test in the year of 2010?2011. Traditional method (which is in study book) was applied to control group while Mind map and Vee diagrams were applied to the experiment group while teaching the Polygons topic. In the working, a success test that had 35 questions was developed but decreased 25 questions because of the thought of specialists.For repeated measures, at the end of the teaching post-test is applied to both of the groups and relation between the groups pre-test and post-test scores are determined with the two factor ANOVA test. At the end of the process experiment groups students? opinions about the Mind maps and Vee diagram techniques are tried to determine. 40 days after this experiment, a permanence test which includes pre-test and post-test questions is applied to the experiment groups. Scores between the permanence test results are compared with the two factor ANOVA test.There is no significant difference between groups according to the pre-test results (p > 0,05), post-test results showed that there is a significant difference between groups in favor of experiment group(p<0,01).According to the permanence test results, showed that there is a significant difference between groups in favor of experiment group(p<0,05 ).These results showed that Mind maps and Vee diagram techniques are more effective than the traditional teaching method.
