Abstract (EN)

The word antibiotic is derived from the Greek word anti and bios, and can be obtained from natural sources such as molds and plants or produced artificially media as antibiotic substances and the viability of microorganisms can be supressed or killed. However, resistance to antibiotics was observed for a number of reasons and the activity of antibiotics has changed. Antibiotics have various mechanisms of action and have a number of targets to which they affect. These antibacterial resistance pathways may be natural or acquired. One of the reasons that are effective against antibiotic resistance is efflux pumps. By means of these pumps antibiotics or chemical substances are released from the bacteria to the external environment and the antibiotic cannot function in the bacteria. The pump types are MDR, SMR, MATE, ABC and MATE. A few inhibitors such as PAβN, INF55, CCCP and so on are now available and it is known that scientific studies are still in progress. In this study, verapamil, thioridazine HCl and PAβN as efflux pump inhibitors, were used in combination with antibiotics to inhibit efflux pumps in multi drug resistant Escherichia coli strains, which were isolated from different sources, and positive results were obtained. As a result; the effect of verapamil was 98.41%; thioridazine HCl 96.82% and 38.09% for PAβN, with the highest effect observed in verapamil and thioridazine HCl.
