Abstract (EN)
This study discusses Leibniz's and Kant's understandings of space through the distinction between intuition and thought. It attempts to demonstrate how the distinction made between sources of knowledge shape these philosophers' understandings of space. Against Leibniz who takes thought to be the only source of knowledge, Kant asserts that intuition is also a source of knowledge, along with thought. According to Kant, in order to reach knowledge, one needs intuition as well as concepts. Kant strives to delineate our faculty of understanding, and unlike Leibniz, approaches the subject matter epistemologically instead of metaphysically. This leads to space taking up a new meaning in his system of thought. Kant rejects Leibniz's understanding of space as relational and attempts to prove that space is a form of sensibility. He centers on the empirical reality and transcendental ideality of space.
