A comparative discourse analysis of international media coverage on Kosovo's path toward independence

The influence of media in today's worldwide agendas is crucial and their role can take place in different forms. The main goal of this thesis is to conduct a comparative discourse analysis of the international media coverage on Kosovo's Path toward Independence. The research is focused on the five international media outlets and their coverage on the five turning points in the period of March 2004 to June 2010. The author tries to conduct a comparative discourse analysis of five international media coverage on Kosovo's Path toward Independence of the selected news, articles, columns, and editorials from BBC, New York Times, DW, Ria Novosti, and Al Jazzera. The discourse used in the news and in all the articles written by the five international media describes the events that took place in Kosovo, which were compared to find the specific position of the respective media towards the path of Kosovo to independence. The interest in analyzing the news covered by the media of these countries relies on the fact that these countries have had a major impact on making Kosovo part of international agendas. Based on the findings gained, Kosovo process toward independence is covered objectively by the majority of media analyzed in this research study and discourse differences are identified between the international media regarding the Kosovo case.
