Abstract (EN)

This thesis explores the role of renewable energy in Tunisia, focusing specifically on its application in an airport setting. The study takes the Djerba-Zarzis Airport as a case example, aiming to assess how clean energy sources can be integrated into such a high-consumption facility. Rather than relying solely on theoretical data, the research is grounded in real electricity consumption records from the airport. Using HOMER Pro software, different hybrid energy systems are modeled by inputting actual load demands, local weather patterns, and economic factors. These simulations help evaluate the technical and financial feasibility of shifting to a more sustainable energy setup. The project goes beyond just identifying potential renewable sources; it also looks closely at the storage options that could work in tandem with solar and wind power. Since energy production from renewables can fluctuate depending on environmental conditions, storage plays a critical role in maintaining a stable power supply throughout the day and across seasons. This study evaluates the long-term advantages of the proposed energy system using important metrics such as Net Present Cost (NPC), Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE), and return on investment. While economic factors are a primary focus, the research also highlights the environmental benefits achieved by reducing dependence on fossil fuels, underscoring sustainability as a fundamental aspect of the analysis. Finally, the thesis places this local analysis within a broader national context. It briefly considers Tunisia's energy goals and how renewable adoption in strategic locations like airports could support a more sustainable national grid. The findings may be useful not just for airport authorities, but for other sectors exploring hybrid energy systems in regions with similar conditions.
