An analysis of education-related news during the COVID-19 pandemic

During the extraordinary period that began with the emergence of the Covid-19 pandemic, education, along with all other areas of social life, was negatively affected. In this process, the media's portrayal of issues related to the pandemic and developments in areas of social life negatively impacted by the pandemic gained importance. The primary aim of this research is to provide a general evaluation of education-related news featured in the Hürriyet newspaper during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study group consists of education-related news articles published in Hürriyet between 2020 and 2022. The status, yearly distribution, themes, discourse characteristics, the perspectives featured, and the educational approach reflected in these news articles were examined using document analysis and analyzed through content analysis. The research findings show that the majority of the education-related news articles examined focused on higher education, and that discourse elites were prominently featured in news articles related to education, remedial education, and the education system.
