Determination of the relationship between levels of compassion fatigue and burnout in nurses during the covid-19 outbreak

Aim: This study was conducted to determine the relationship between levels of compassion fatigue and burnout in nurses during the Covid-19 outbreak. Method: The sample of this study, which is a cross-sectional descriptive study, consisted of the nurses (N = 248) working at Turgutlu State Hospital and the nurses (n = 181) who agreed to participate in the study voluntarily. The research data were collected between August and November 2020. As the data collection tools of the research The Nurse Information Form, Compassion Fatigue Scale and Masclach Burnout Scale were used. SPSS 15.0 package program was used to evaluate the data. Findings: Nurses' compassion fatigue scale total score was 2.01 ± 0.31, value awareness subdimension mean score was 2.14 ± 0.37, valuing others subdimension mean score was 1.69 ± 0.26, power perception subscale mean score was1, 97 ± 0.43 and the eigenvalue subscale mean score was 2.05 ± 0.51. When the distribution of the mean scores of the Masclach burnout scale subdimensions of the nurses was examined, the mean scores of the emotional exhaustion subdimension were 20.32 ± 8.09, the depersonalization sub-dimension mean scores were 7.46 ± 4.27, and the personal accomplishment sub-dimension mean scores were 20.30 ± 7. Conclusion: Generally, weak correlations were found between the Nurses' Compassion Fatigue and Masclach Burnout scales sub-dimension and total scores. It is recommended to conduct similar studies with a larger sample at regular intervals in the later stages of the pandemic. Keywords: Covid-19, Nursing, Compassion Fatigue, Burnout
