Abstract (EN)

This thesis covers the research we have carried out with regard to Leibniz?s criticism towards Locke?s concerning the problem of the origin of words. The problem of the origin of words has been discussed by many philosophers in the history of philosophy. Various approaches suggested on this subject, are examined on the basis of the opposition of ?naturalism / conventionalism? in general. Therefore we have benefited from this opposition herein by indicating the ideas of Locke and Leibniz. We prepared this thesis in three parts within the frame of this problematic. In the first part which includes a description of the historical background of the issue we have examined the language conception of the Christianity doctrine, the verses in the Bible related with language as reference first. Then we have discussed the opinions of Plato, Saint Augustine, Thomas Hobbes and Port-Royal School on the issue. The second part covers the results of our research on Locke?s approach to the origin of words. In the third part we have examined the Leibniz?s criticism against Locke?s approach. Finally we have presented overall considerations on the results of our research in the conclusion part.
