Art education in primary schools in Republic period

This study aims to reveal the state of art education in primary schools during the period from the proclamation of the Republic (1923) to the Democratic Party Period (1950). Although there are certain studies on art education in the Republican period, the number of researches in the context of curricula is limited. In the first years of the Republic, art education was studied especially in the context of major schools or institutions. However, most of the studies conducted in this context are only descriptive of the situation. In this study, besides describing how art education was given in primary schools in the first years of the Republic, it was also tried to determine what skills, competencies and values were prominent in the lessons within the scope of the education in question. In this direction, primary school programs in the mentioned period were examined. The study is based on historical research design, one of the qualitative research methods. The data of the study consists of primary school programs implemented between 1923 and 1950. These are respectively; 1924 Curriculum for Primary Schools, 1926 Curriculum for Primary Schools, 1927 Curriculum for Village Schools, 1936 Primary School Curriculum, 1936 Rural School Curriculum Draft and 1948 Primary School Curriculum. Document analysis technique was used in research data analysis.
