Teaching of geography in the National Education Councils since The Republic Peri̇od

Geography, as a discipline, allows us to understand the Earth in which we live. In explaining the social events, People have tried to benefit from the discipline of geography, too. Geography has a content that has an important place in people's lives. The importance of geography in the Turkish National Education system cannot be denied. Geography education is an important element of education in our country. The historical development of geography, which is so important at every stage of human life, should be investigated. National Education Councils have been effective in the changes in the teaching of geography in our country. For this reason, the aim of this study is to examine the teaching of geography in National Education Councils. In this study, document analysis method, which is one of the qualitative research models, was used. In the study, after the data collection process is completed, in the documents obtained, the Council decisions, commissions decisions and speeches related to geography education are defined. As a result of the study, it was determined that in the National Education Councils VII, X, XIII, XIV, XVI, XVIII and XIX, there were no decisions taken about geography teaching. The commissions formed in line with the decisions taken at the National Education Council IV included geography teaching in their reports. About geography education In the report of the Primary School Program Commission the decision of teaching "History, Geography, Civics lessons which are taught apart in the second semester in primary, together and forming them according to the child psychology" was given place. Apart from this, changes were included in geography lesson curriculum. Inclusion of the subjects "Our Forests and Fishery" into the fourth grade curriculum and "The Sun and Planets Around It", "The World" into the fifth grade curriculum took part in commission reports. In the National Education Council IX, it was decided to integrate and reform the primary and secondary school social studies program related to geography education.
