The development of travel writing in the Turkish literature in the Republican Era (1920 - 1980)

The purpose of the thesis, entitled The Development of Travel Writing in the Turkish Literature in the Republican Era (1920 ? 1980) is to study the text of travel writing as a literary genre in terms of style, exposition and linguistics, and to state the status and the development of travel writing as a distinct genre in that period. In the Turkish Literature in Post-republican Era, the textual structure, style and narration of travel writing genre is limited to its literary value.In the Introduction, first, travel writing as a literary genre is emphasized. At this point, a brief history of travel, the meaning of travel as a word and concept, whether travel is literary genre, the technical properties and limitations of travel writing genre, and the structural properties of travel writing works in terms of textual linguistics are introduced. With a brief discussion on itineraries, şehrengiz (observations a particular city written by Divan poets), sefaretname,(the dairies written by ambassadors), travel works before and after Tanzimat (administrative reforms ? 1839) and in the Post-republican Era, a preparation is made for the 41 works studied.Between 1920 and 1980, the travel writings of men of letters and journalists about the trips abroad are studied, and then major travel writings on domestic trips are dealt with. The selected works are classified according to the countries visited and the dates of visit. Following the classification, an introductory information on each work are presented and the purpose of the trip, the places visited, the viewpoint and the findings of the author are stated. Afterwards, certain comments and evaluations are made, focusing on the linguistic and narrative qualities and sentence structures. To this end, a total of 41 works are analysed from this point of view: 6 works in Chapter 1, 3 in Chapter 2, 4 in Chapter 3, 10 in Chapter 4, 11 in Chapter 5, and 7 in Chapter 6. After each chapter, a holistic evaluation of the works in question is made. So as not to oversize the text of the thesis, the structural qualities of only 4 works are studied from the viewpoint of textual linguistics. Throughout these evaluations, the genre of travel writing in Republican Era is discussed and studied as a whole, the style, narrative and the structural qualities of the works within this genre are studied scientifically. Certain minute scientific details of travel writing genre, which is included in our literary history and yet the qualities and boundaries of which have not been closely studied, are pinpointed.The genre of travel writing has a dynamic structure. Unlike other genres, it usually puts the reader at its centre, paying utmost attention to keep the reader?s interest alive and to avoid long windedness in consistent and coherent parts. The essential qualities of the genre are the attitudes of the writers? viewpoints, the success at determining interesting and impressive subjects, finding out the novelties, and the experience in comparing and contrasting. A new, unexplored place the key to travel writing. Linguistic and stylistic qualities, narrative techniques, structural properties are what distinguishes this genre from other genres.The genre of travel writing is an invaluable tool for authors, literary historians, literary sociologists, literary researchers, and instructors of literature. This genre should be considered as the basis of all other literary genres. As a result, the works studied demonstrate that it gives rise to and supports many sciences and arts, and that it is a major literary genre.
