Abstract (EN)

The meaning og Hagia Sophia (Saint Sophia) is ?holy wisdom?. There are three Hagia Sophias which are known as first, second and third Hagia Sophia which is the today?s Hagia Sophia museum. Hagia Sophia was opened on December 27, 537. The firs building which was built by Justinian I had construction errors in the beginning. The main error was in the dome of Hagia Sophia. The dome of Hagia Sophia was initially lower. Due to its lowness, the dome was putting too much pressure. The dome was damaged by the eartquake which occured on May 7, 558. It was repaired by young Isidore. The dome was elevated by approximately 6.25 m. in this repair. Consequently, the history of the Hagia Sophia is a kind of history repairs.The Ottomans could not pay much attention to maintenance of Hagia Sophia after the reign of Murad IV. The Hagia Sophia was restored during the reign of Abdulmecid. The Restoration by Fossati brothers was the first step of Hagia Sophia on its way to being a museum. And the second step was taken by Atatürk by allowing Thomas Whittemore to do mosaic works in Hagia Sophia in the initial times of republic. To prevent a potential between the Cross and Crescent, Atatürk wanted the Hagia Sophia to be museum. Hagia Sophia became a museum pursuant to 24.11.1934.
