Western image on Cumhuriyet and Zafer newspapers (1950)

This study aimed to examine what kind of images the West is reflected in Turkish print media. As an important period of change in the political and social meaning in the modernization of Turkey it has been chosen to study this subject in 1950. The study consists of four main sections, excluding the introduction and conclusion sections. In the first chapter, the development of the image of the West in Turkish modernization is discussed as an example of a country experiencing late modernization and in the context of the country's relations with the West; It is justified why the period under consideration was chosen. In the second part, the transformations that the Turkish press has undergone due to the regime change are discussed in general and the situation of the press in the period under examination is highlighted. The chronicles of Cumhuriyet and Zafer newspapers selected as examples were announced. The third part of the study is devoted to the method part. In the study, the qualitative content analysis method was used over themes, and the articles containing the Western perception were selected by examining the newspaper articles in the relevant history one by one and then analyzed and interpreted. In the fourth part; The findings of the research have been interpreted. In this section, what were the perceptions about the West in the articles published in Zafer and Cumhuriyet newspapers throughout 1950 and the differences and similarities of these perceptions were found. Thus, the Western perception of the written press constitute one of the major components of modernization in Turkey and differences in these perceptions have been identified. In the conclusion part; With a general perspective, the imaginations of the two newspapers on the subject were determined and these imaginations were explained in the light of their similarities from the conceptual chapters and the theoretical findings obtained from marginalizing.
