Vitamin D deficiencies in iron and relationship with other trace elements

Abstract (EN)
INTRODUCTION: In addition to its important role in bone metabolism, Vitamin D has been associated with chronic diseases such as cancers, cardiovascular diseases and autoimmune diseases in recent years and its deficiency is a major health problem worldwide. In the human body, trace elements function in important biological processes. It is well known that vitamin D metabolism and action mechanisms sahare some intersection with those of trace elements. In order to shed light on these underlying mechanisms, we planned to investigate the relationship between vitamin D and trace elements such as iron, zinc, copper and selenium. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Serum trace elements were measured by ICP-OES method in the patient groups divided into deficiency and control groups according to vitamin D levels. In addition, blood count parameters to assess iron deficiency and blood biochemistry parameters associated with iron deficiency were studied with routine auto analyzers. RESULT: Group I: vitamin D deficient (<20 ng/mL); group II: vitamin D insufficient (20-30 ng/mL); group III: normal vitamin D levels (30-110 ng/mL) (control). Among the trace elements, Cu showed no significant difference between the groups, while Fe, Zn, Se showed statistically significant difference between these groups. HTC and MCHC in women and HB, HTC and MCHC in men showed significant difference. Ferritin in both men and women showed significant difference between the groups. CONCLUSİON: The results of our study indicate that zinc and iron levels are closely related to vitamin D levels. This may be due both to the involvement of vitamin D in the homeostasis of trace elements, but also to the fact that trace elements control key points in vitamin D metabolism.
