Abstract (EN)

The Nagorno-Karabakh issue is not just a simple armed conflict between the Turks of Azerbaijan and Armenians in the last quarter of the 20th century. The issue dates back to a long time ago. In the emergence and progress of this issue, ethnic nationalism and religious arguments, irredentist policies of regional and global powers, and economic and sociological elements had an impact. The continuity and diversity of the causes and actors contributed to the complexity of the solution. The insolubility of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict essentially lies hidden in the geopolitical position of the Caucasus-Caspian region. This study, which aims to provide a holistic perspective and an objective understanding of the reasons of the controversies and conflicts between Azerbaijan Turks and Armenians that date back to several centuries ago, has been purposively titled not the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, but the Nagorno-Karabakh issue. This because the word issue has a depth of meaning that includes conflict, controversy and dispute. In order to get to the source of the issue, first of all, the demographic background of Karabakh was researched. The main causes behind the Nagorno-Karabakh issue and the experiences of the Turks of Azerbaijan in the face of this issue have been elaborated. In addition, our work deals with the diplomatic initiatives of Azerbaijan heads of state after independence for the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh issue. We discussed some of the main elements that prevent the solution of the issue despite many diplomatic initiatives. Throughout the study, we endeavored to make use of the articles, books and documents written in fields such as international relations, economics, history and sociology. Key Words: Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh, Armenians, Conflict, İssue
