Examining certain critical behaviors in a selected sector within the scope of behavior-based security management

This study aims to analyze and reduce hazardous behaviors identified in occupational health and safety within a specific sector through the use of the Behavior-Based Safety (BBS) approach. The study was conducted in a selected contractor company operating in the electrical distribution sector, which is considered a highly hazardous industry in our country. Initially, a risk analysis was conducted in the chosen company to identify the most common hazards and risks in the electrical distribution sector, and the necessary precautions were determined. Within the scope of the risk assessment, five hazardous behaviors that most frequently lead to accidents among employees were selected. These hazardous behaviors were examined using one of the widely used root cause analysis methods, the 5 Whys analysis, to identify their root causes. Subsequently, the same critical behaviors were also addressed using the ABC approach within the scope of Behavior-Based Safety Management. The pre-behavior and post-behavior conditions of employees while performing these behaviors were analyzed and interpreted. The study aims to further increase the perspective and approach of Behavior-Based Safety Management in our country within the scope of accident prevention approaches. Consequently, it was understood that the findings resulting from the root cause analysis of the examined critical behaviors were limited and not proactive. However, when the same behaviors were examined with the ABC approach, the results provided more understanding of why the current behaviors were performed due to being based on observation.
