The Names of the Man-Made Objects in the Stories of Dede Korkut

Abstract (EN)

A nation's life-style, beliefs, worldview, and survival are reflected in the concepts of language. In an environment where cultural change took long time and pre-Islamic culture coexisted with Islamic culture, Turkish also provided various opportunities for Turkish people to name objects belonging to their life and culture. In this study, the vocabulary of man-made Turkish object names in the Dede Korkut Stories, which are a source of inspiration for researchers in many ways, among the masterpieces of Turkish language, literature and culture were examined. Based on the names given to the man-made objects in the Book of Dede Korkut it is aimed to point the cultural developments and to present the possibilities of expressions in Turkish. In this study, 153 Turkish object names found on Dresden and Vatican copies were examined. The origin of 72 of these names has been determined in Old Turkish texts. It has been determined that 139 of the obtained object names are mentioned in works and dictionaries belonging to historical Turkish dialects. In addition, it was observed that 135 of the 153 object names identified in the Dede Korkut Book were used in Turkey Turkish and dialects, while 18 were obsolete. It is seen that 10 of the words that still used in Turkey Turkish and dialects have undergone a change in meaning, and 125 of them endures their original meaning as in the Book of Dede Korkut.
