COMPARISON OF THE BIODIESELS MADE FROM DIFFERENT KINDSOF OILS(M.Sc. Thesis )Atakan EROLGAZI UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYSeptember 2006ABSTRACTAlternative energy resources gain increasing importance due to the energycrises that the world faces nowadays. One of the alternative energy resources isbiodesel and its popularity increases due to the fact that it is a renewable energysource. The raw material of biodiesel is liquid oil and because of this fact;biodiesel industry has also great importance affecting our country?s agriculturalpotential. In this research, the quality of biodiesels obtained from various oils isexperimentally determined and compared with EN 14214 Standards. Especially, the performance of the so called Anatoilan plant, i.e. Safflower, was checkedand both kinds of it, i.e Remzibey and Dinçer types, were found to be suitablefor biodiesel production conforming EN 14214 Standards. Moreover, thepossibility of decreasing the time required for phase seperation afteresterification reaction was investigated and it was found that performing twostage reaction and use of sodium methilate as the catalyst led to importantreduction in the time necessary for phase seperation. In addition, biodiesel istreated with talk instead of washing with water and better results wereobtained.Science code : 603.01.01Key words : Biodiesel, oil, safflowerPage number : 72Adviser : Prof.Dr. Bekir Zühtü UYSAL
