Determination of fetal hemoglobin levels of anemic patients in different age groups by using alkali denaturation method

Thesis DETERMINATION OF FETAL HEMOGLOBIN LEVELS OF ANEMIC PATIENTS IN DIFFERENT AGE GROUPS BY USING ALKALI DENATURATION METHOD JaleöZASLAN Gaziantep University-Graduate School of Health Sciences Department of Biochemistry Supervisor : AsistProf: Necat YILMAZ Ocak-1997, 95 Pages The goal of this stuffy is to establish the values of fetal hemoglobin at 119 patients who applied to the Gaziantep University Şahiribey Research and Application Hospital complaining of anemia (6 month-2 age group, 29 ; 2-15 age group, 30 ; adult, women, 42 ; adult men ; 18) and 38 control subjects (6 month-2 age group, 8 ; 2-15 age group, 18 ; adult women and men, 12) using the alkali denatüration method and to study whether or not anemia is related to fetal hemoglobin. Li addition, 85 patients with MCV < 78 fL and 90 patients between ages of 2.5 -70.0 the correlation values of fetal hemoglobin, age, RBC, Hb, Hct and RBC indices were also examined. The results showed that the reasons of hypochromia and microcytosis were not associated with fetal hemoglobin but could be as a result of iron deficiency. The negative correlation between HbF values and MCV in patients with MCV < 78 fL suggests there is a need for further study of their higher HbF etyology. We concluded that alkali denatüration method is cheap, easy and reproducible for routine and investigation purposes in clinical laboratories. Key Words : HbF, Hb, anemia, MCV.
