The adventure of deism and its contemporary socio-cultural view

Human being is an entity that thinks, comprehends, questions and strives to make sense of the things they have always questioned since their existence. This questioning first started with the curiosity of self-knowledge, and then continued with the ability to understand the universe and creative thinking. Just as every geography has different perceptions and acceptances, every age has its own reactive dimensions. Deism is one of these philosophical dimensions. The main purpose of the research is to examine the theological arguments of the participants, the social facts and events that lead them to this attitude, the communication channels in their social norms and harmony, and the view of these individuals, who prefer deism, to religious institutions and society. The study consists of two parts: In the introduction part, information about the subject, purpose, importance, scope and method of the research are given. In the first chapter, the conceptual content of the belief in deism, framed by examining the national and international literature on the main problematic of the thesis, is the major transformations of the age; secularization is discussed in the light of globalization and technological developments. In the second chapter, the findings obtained from the interview data are examined and the results are evaluated. In this study, which focuses on examining which codes are in the background of the reasons leading to the tendency of individuals to deist belief, with its sociological dimensions, a qualitative research method based on the interpretive approach is used. In this context, interviews are conducted with 35 participants who define themselves as deists. A semi-structured interview form is used to collect the data, and the content analysis technique is used in the analysis of the data. The findings obtained from the participants are compared with today's social dynamics and practices, categorized with the Maxqda 2020 qualitative analysis package program and interpreted on the findings. According to the information obtained from the deist individuals participating in the research, it is observed that deism has spread not only among the youth but also at a level that covers all age groups. The turbulent living conditions that increase the anxiety of the individuals, the factors that restrict their questioning, the search for freedom for a comfortable and peaceful life and their reactivity are effective in the participants' preference for deism. It is understood that individuals, who are in search of a secular life within the framework of reason and logic, tend to currents of thought such as deism.
