Conversion of iron and steel waste products into iron fertilizer

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to obtain iron fertilizer (Fe2(SO4)3 and FeEDTA solution) by recovering iron (Fe) element from steel mill slag and rolling mill scale, which are produced during production in the iron and steel industry and are classified as non-hazardous waste. For this purpose, in the first step, the slag and scale samples taken were first ground to 40-90 micron sizes in a ball mill and then the element content was determined by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) to determine the total nutrient and pollutant potential. 20.17% Fe content was determined in the steelwork slag and 77.48% Fe content in the scale. In the second step, solubilization was carried out with scale chelating agent (Ethylenediamine tetra acetic acid) EDTA and concentrated sulfuric acid (H2SO4) since it has the highest Fe concentration to prepare iron fertilizer solution. The element content of the prepared ferrous fertilizer solution in AAS was determined as 2.63% Fe by mass in Fe2(SO4)3 solution and 2.15% Fe by mass in Fe-EDTA solution.
