The Temettuat Books of Ortapare subdistrict of Demirci Town

Temettuat books which are present take a substantial place among rich Ottoman archive documents reaching time. After the establisment of Tanzimat Reforms these books started to be orginized to clarify information which include the social and economical position of the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century. The amount of properties and incomes of tax payers were recorded in detail on the temettuat books where temettuat counting took place. İn this study the social and economic position of the villages of Ortaparetownship in Demirci District under the authority of Saruhan sanjak was researched. The main resource of this study is the temettuat books consist of detailed information about the demografic structure and the names used in the township. On these temettuat books the individual property of every person were elaborately recorded. The total amount of land, the sum of cultivated land, the kinds of corps and the tax taken from tax payers were recorded in detail. Temettuat books also give information about the number of animals and incomes, commercial and educational affairs were all mentioned comprehensively. In this study the books of 28 villages of Ortapare which is one of the three townships of Demirci District is taken into consideration. The study consists of abstract and two other parts. In the abstract, the importance of temettuat books for The Ottoman Empire socio-economic history are emphasized and Ortapare temettuat books were presented. In the first part, the administrative structure of the township, the population, the tax payer's social status and sectoral distribution were explained.In the second part, the issues of the industrial structure, farming, township's agricultural productions and the taxes are mentioned. The study is ended with a conclusion and bibliography.
