Özet (EN)

The idea of democracy with its 2500 years of history still remains to be the most common form of government. The model that prevails particularly in the West today brings with it many problems. The fact that different regimes or ideologies introduce themselves as democratic and claim that the purpose of their action is towards the realization of democratic ideals leads to many discussions. In this study, the historical and theoretical background of the principles of democracy is emphasized and the three basic models of modern democracy are analyzed: Athenian democracy, Liberal democracy and Marxist democracy. The research has focused on the differences between ancient and modern democracy and discussed the question of which models of democracy may be considered to be more appropriate. The principles and shortcomings of Marxist democracy is examined through the Paris Commune and discussed whether its suitability for realizing democratic ideals and whether it may provide alternative solutions to the problems facing the democracies of today. Keywords: Democracy, Athenian Democracy, Liberal Democracy, Marxist Democracy, Paris Commune
