Pan-İslamism in Turkey during Democratic Party rule

ABSTRACT The date of May 14, 1950 is the most important step of the transition to a multiparty system in Turkish political life. The Democratic Party were chosen instead of Republican People's Party as founder party and for the first time there had been a change of power in Republic of Turkey's history. With the Democratic Party's coming into power of, some changes had occurred in the understanding of the state of the Republic of Turkey. Instead of a state understanding based on the principles of secularism, which sees the secularism as a separate execution of religion and state affairs, this understanding of the state, which perceives the secularism as the protection of freedom of religion and conscience, has emerged. This different meaning of the people of the Democratic Party's managerial staff caused the revolution process to separate into two groups as the revolutions that have been made to the people and the revolutions that can not be reduced to the people. In the light of this idea, Islamism, with the idea that it can change some of the revolutions that the former rulership realised, became a popular political discourse of the Democratic Party. The state policy shaped around Islamism, is opening a new door in the political life of the Republic of Turkey; Islam, which was not thought to be interested in politics after the revolutions, was allowed to show itself again in political life.
