Democrat Party (DP) Malatya in the period of commission: City, politics and society (1950 - 1960)

At this master degree thesis, we examined the transition to the multi-party system in Turkey, the term which has been a lot of problems related to this transition, and especially the transition to the multi-party system in Malatya, which is the main subject of our study. At this context, we examined the actions of democrat party, which was set up against the republican people's party, in Turkey and then in Malatya. We studied the struggle of democrat party against the republican people's party and political, social and cultural developments in Malatya in the ten years of power of democrat party. At this study, we explained the demographic, political, social structure and the management units in Malatya during 1950-1960. Then we explained the foundation of democrat party in Malatya and main politics of it in Malatya. At the other parts of our study, we compiled the election results in the term of democrat party. At the end of our study, we examined the natural disasters, the construction activities, education and teaching system, the industry, the agricultural life, press, and the other improvements during 1950-1960. By this study, we tried to set the light on this term which is named the vicious period. We tried to reveal that; the separation of Adıyaman from Malatya was not a political maneuver, the alewi people lived in Malatya supported the democrat party then, and the investments which started during the term of republican people's party were continued during the democrat party power. We tried to eliminate some false things that were known true. We aimed to find out all improvements about the democrat party and Malatya in this period, and we wanted to lead up to other researches at this area. While preparing our study we used the people who lived in that period, the newspapers, the novels, the books, the magazines, the pictures, the video recordings, the essays, the thesis and the research works of the period. With all these studies we tried to enlighten the period brought by the multi-party system in Malatya. Besides political developments, we tried to clarify the period of Malatya in transition to the multi-party system. Keywords: Malatya, democrat party
