The reflection of politics on the press in Konya during the years of Democrat Party (1946-1960)

With the foundation of the Democrat Party in 1946 in Turkey, a strong opposition emerged against Republican People's Party. With Democrat Party's coming to power in 1950, long-running one-party state (power) of Republican People's Party ended. This thesis studies the reflection of the political events - through Konya press - that took place between 1946-1960. Our study is consist of an introduction, four chapters and a conclusion part. The newspapers published in Konya between 1946-1960 were used as the main source in our study. In addition we benefited Turkish Presidency State Archives of the Republic of Turkey – Department of Republican Era Archives, as well as. In the introduction part, we gave some knowledge about Democrat Party and the period of Turkey's transition to multi-party political life. In the first chapter, we tried to express a general panorama of Konya by explaining the city's population, political structure and media/press between 1946-1960. In the second chapter, we gave some knowledge about the reflection of the developments - like political events, general and local elections, party congresses - in Konya press from the foundation of the Democrat Party in 1946 to Democrat Party's coming to power in 1950. In the third chapter, we evaluated the reflection of the developments - like political events, elections, party congresses and political discussions - in Konya press during the years in which Democrat Party was in power. In the fourth chapter we studied the reflections of developments in Konya press after during and after May 27, 1960 coup d'état. In the conclusion part, we made a general evaluation using the historical information.
