The effect of patient education given by the demonstration method on the success of using metered dose inhaler

Aim: This study was conducted in a quasi-experimental type in a pre-post-test order to evaluate the effectiveness of the training given by the demonstration method in patients who will use a metered dose inhaler for the first time. Materials and Methods: The population of the study is the patients who will use a metered dose inhaler for the first time between 03 February - 30 July 2020, to the Aydın Adnan Menderes University Hospital Chest Diseases Polyclinic, and the sample is; In the G-Power analysis based on the success of using a metered dose inhaler, 56 patients were formed with an error level of 0.05 and a power of 99%. The patients were determined as a control/education group with a simple randomization method on the www.randomizer.org website and evaluated with the "Metered Dose Inhaler Skills Evaluation Form"evaluations have been made.It was collected by face-to-face interview method using the "Patient Identification Form" created by the researchers and the "Metered Dose Inhaler Skills Evaluation Form" prepared by the Turkish Respiratory Research Association. Statistical evaluation; In SPSS 22.00 program, Kolmogorov Smirnov, t test, Mann Whitney U, Wilcoxon, Anova, Pearson and Post Hoc Bonferroni tests were performed with p<0.05 as significant. Results:It was found that there was a significant difference between the 4th week skill total score averages of the education and control group patients, and between the age groups and the 4th week skill total score averages (p<0.05), and the 4th week mean score of the education group patients was higher than the control group. detected. Education and control group patients mostly; It was determined that they made mistakes in the steps of "take a deep breath and exhale" and "press the metal tube down and start breathing slowly at the same time", but the mistakes of the training group decreased in the 4th week.. Conclusion: In this study, it was concluded that the training given by the demonstration method to the patients who will use metered dose inhaler for the first time is effective in increasing the ability to use the inhaler correctly and effectively.It is recommended that the training be given to the patients who will use drugs for the first time by a nurse who is specialized in the subject, that the patients should evaluate the drug use at regular intervals, and that the training should be done and explained by using visual resources, especially with auditory resources.
