The effect of locus of control on achievement emotions in physical education: The roles of achievement motive and teacher support

The purpose of the study was two-fold; the first aim was to investigate the impact of locus of control on achievement emotions for physical education and to explore the mediating role of achievement motive in this impact, the second aim was to determine the relationship between locus of control, achievement emotions, and achievement motive with the support of physical education teachers. The sample of the study was composed of 894 secondary-school students. The results showed that internal locus of control had an effect on positive achievement emotions for physical education and revealed the mediating role of achievement motive on this effect. Internal locus of control together with achievement motive explains the 19% of the variation in positive achievement emotions. The conducted tests also revealed the significance of the indirect effect. Besides, results pointed the effect of external locus of control on negative achievement emotions for physical education and indicated the mediating role of achievement motive in this effect. External locus of control together with achievement motive explained 34% of the variance in negative achievement emotions and the mediating effect was deemed significant. Additionally, physical education teacher support showed positive relation with positive achievement emotions, negative relation with negative achievement emotions, negative relation with external locus of control, and positive relation with internal locus of control and achievement motive. Finally, study revealed locus of control's and achievement motive's significant role in achievement emotions which is one of the important factor for achievement in physical education.
