Effects of boswellic acid and chebulagic acid on experimental periodontitis model in rats

The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of systemically applied boswellic acid and chebulagic acid on serum oxidative status and alveoler bone loss in periodontal disease treatment compared with doxycycline and saline. In our study, 49 male Wistar rats were used. Experimental periodontitis was created by placing a silk ligature around first molars molar teeth of the rats. Following removal of the ligatures in groups, boswellic acid, chebulagic acid, doxycycline and saline were administered systemically. Total antioxidant level (TAS), total oxidant level (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI) values were determined in the serum samples of the sacrificed rats at the end of experiment period. The alveolar bone loss (ABL), attachment loss (AL) and alveolar bone area (ABA) were investigated by histomorphometric evaluation. AKS and AK values of boswelling acid and chebulagic acid groups were lower and AKA values were higher than saline group (p <0.05). There was no significant difference between doxycycline and experimental groups for AKA, AK and AKS values (p <0.05). There was no significant difference in TAS, TOS and OSI levels (p <0.05). The systemic administration of doxycycline and myricetin in periodontal disease, within the limits of the study, showed positive effects on periodontium.
