Özet (EN)

Salt, also known as Sodium Chloride, plays important roles on human life. First reason for its importance is that, it is a source for Sodium and Chlorine elements, which are two of the twelve dominant elements in human body. The other reason is that, it is the main raw material of the chemical industry. Salt is produced by three methods. These methods are solar evaporation, solution mining and rock mining In Turkey, salt is produced by solar evaporation and rock mining techniques. One of the plants that produce salt by solar evaporation method is the Tekel Çamaltı Solar Salt Plant. This plant has been operated mainly by manpower since it has been established in late 19th century. A modernization study was conducted including a new salt purification factory and a mechanical harvester, in last decade. However, attempts to improve harvesting techniques using mechanical methods failed due to tilting and excessive penetration of the harvester blade into the pond ground. In order to investigate this machine-soil interaction problem: firstly geotechnical properties of the pond soils were determined both with field and with laboratory studies, and secondly this problem was analyzed by means of the finite element method (FEM). In this study, also the usability of the salt layer as a base material of the harvester path was investigated. In that consideration, the strength and general geotechnical characteristics of the salt were determined by both field and laboratory studies and a FEM analysis was conducted.
