The place of maritime transportation in Türkiye's trade

This study examines the maritime transportation in Turkey and its economic impact. The main objective is to compare the costs of different transportation modes and highlight the economic advantages of maritime transportation. Turkey, due to its geographical location, is highly suitable for maritime transportation. This factor influences the country's preference for sea transportation. This preference provides an alternative to land and air transportation, which incur high costs. Elevated transportation expenses generally have a negative impact on production capacity and the economy. Maritime transportation not only hosts ships through the abundant ports in Turkey but also contributes to the economy by creating employment opportunities. This contribution goes beyond mere transportation activities and supports economic revitalization by providing job opportunities. Moreover, the country possesses rich underground resources, particularly natural gas reserves in the Eastern Mediterranean, which hold significant potential. Every decision made by the government will be related to exploring and developing these reserves, energy export rates, national energy policies, and evaluating regional policies effectively. This research compares the costs of transportation modes used in Turkey and examines the contributions of maritime transportation to the economy, including passenger transportation, maritime trade, and the impact of coastal seas on the economy. The aim is to provide a more detailed perspective on the significance of maritime transportation on the Turkish economy.
