The level of knowledge of detained and convicted prisoners in Denizli province regarding sexually transmitted diseases: An intervention study

The physical structures and population densities of correctional institutions make the implementation of a holistic health management strategy against infectious diseases a critical necessity for the protection of public health. Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), in particular, are of particular importance due to their high potential for transmission and serious health consequences. Risky sexual behaviors, substance use, lack of information, and inadequate health education are factors that increase the spread of STDs. In this context, the study conducted at Denizli T Type Closed Penitentiary Institution aimed to determine the knowledge levels of inmates and convicts about STDs and to evaluate the impact of the education provided. The study was planned in two stages. In the first stage, a cross-sectional, descriptive study was conducted, and in the second stage, changes in knowledge levels following the education were measured in the short, medium, and long term. 98 volunteer participants were included in the study, and informed consent was obtained from all participants. Data were collected using a survey form developed by the researcher. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and appropriate statistical tests. The research findings indicated that a significant portion of participants had limited knowledge about sexually transmitted infections, engaged in some risky behaviors, and did not regularly use contraceptive methods. Variables such as education level, information sources, and substance use were found to have significant effects on knowledge levels and attitudes. Consequently, prison populations need to be made more aware of sexually transmitted infections, health education programs strengthened, and targeted interventions designed to reduce risky behaviors. These findings provide important data for the prevention of infectious diseases in prisons.
