Abstract (EN)
In the coinage of Apameia, minted from the reign of Augustus (27 BC–AD 14) to the end of the reign of Gallienus (AD 253–268), the obverse typically features portraits of the emperor and members of the imperial family, while the reverse depicts the deities of the city's pantheon, the hero Kelainos, the satyr and river god Marsyas, or mythological subjects and symbols associated with the city. The most frequently depicted deities on the reverse are Tyche, Zeus, Athena, and Artemis of Ephesia. Among the other reverse designs, the most common type is Marsyas. Marsyas is represented both as Marsyas the satyr playing the aulos and as Marsyas the river god. The river god Maiandros is also frequently depicted, either alone or together with Marsyas, while the city's other rivers, Orgas and Therma, also appear on several issues. In addition to symbolizing abundance and fertility, the sheaf of wheat -referring to the myth of Lityerses- and the eagle of Zeus are also among recurring motifs. Furthermore, mythological scenes related to the local cults and traditions, such as the Athena and Marsyas myth, the Lion of Dionysus, the Flood of Noah, the hero Kelainos, and depictions of Adrasteia and the Corybantes, are also commonly represented on the reverse of the coins. Within the scope of this thesis, a comprehensive study was undertaken to identify and classify the Roman Provincial coins of Apameia, with particular focus on those preserved in the Denizli Museum. To this and, a General Cataloque of Apameia based on an extensive survey of coin cataloques, academic publications, and auction databasis. This general catalog contains 192 types in various denominations. Subsequently, a Denizli Museum Apameia Catalog was prepared, listing 204 coins representing 65 types, including one newly identified type. The comparison of these datasets revealed seven new coin types, new variants, and addtitional examples of previously unique issues.
