Correlation of dentolabial analysis with aesthetic perception

Aesthetic; expresses what is beautiful in art or nature. In recent years, studies on physical aesthetics and psychosocial effects have increased. Studies show that the effects of dental aesthetics on physical attractiveness are undeniable. The aim of this study was to evaluate the consistency of certain measurable dentolabial criteria between the aesthetic values accepted in the literature and the subjective opinions of physicians. In this direction, four experts and four specialty students in the field of Prosthodontics working on smile design were selected as the evaluators of the study. Smile photos taken from 200 volunteer participants with only the mouth region were examined under five different dentolabial criteria. The results of measurement of the curvature of the incisal edge and lower lip parallelism, incisal edge and lower lip contact, laugh line, buccal corridor and interincisal line and midline variables and subjective assessments of the evaluators were compared with Cochran Q test. The results of the study show that aesthetic perception is subjective and it was observed that there was a significant correlation between objective measurements and subjective perception in the incisal edge and lower lip parallelism, laugh line and buccal corridor variables. When the evaluators were examined, no statistically significant difference was found between male and female individuals, similarly between experts and specialty students. According to the results of this study, it is recommended to be useful to consider subjective views and objective values together in order to obtain a successful aesthetic result in dental treatment planning.
