Thanks to its geographical position and rich history, it has lots ofhistorical architectural monuments.Nevertheless, these territories, which has been host for civilizations, are also inimportant and active seismic belts. Besides the abrasive effect of elapsed time,destructive effect of earthquakes has been made these structures ruin andbecome useless or collapse and disappear from the history. Our task is toprotect these historical monuments, whose value cannot be compared withanything else, against possible future environmental threatsToday not only the historical monuments within these territories but also theworld?s cultural inheritance is under threat.The aim of this study is to search for restoration and strengthening methods forthe historical monuments damaged by earthquakes and under threat today tobe protected and passed to the next generations and to help to make consciousthe experts from different disciplines who will be charged within the scope ofthis study. This study is discussed in eight chapters.A General Introduction to the subject is given in the first chapter and in thesecond chapter protection and strengthening concepts and also generalapproach to the subject are discussed, in the third chapter definitions anddescriptions of cultural properties are given and in the forth chapter structuralfeatures of historical monuments and effects of earthquakes on monuments arementioned, structural behaviours of historical monuments is given in the fifthchapter and in the sixth chapter strengthening elements of historicalmonuments and in the seventh chapter strengthening proposals are consideredand finally in the eighth chapter suggestions and conclusions are quoted.Science Code : 804 . 1.085Key Words : Eartquake, historical monuments, strengtheningPage Number : 105Adviser : Prof. Dr. Mehmet Emin TUNA
