Investigation of the effect of biodiesel produced from leather industry waste oils on diesel engine performance and emissions

Abstract (EN)

Today, the number of reserves that can meet the increasing oil need in the world is decreasing day by day. Researchers who think that meeting this need with oil may be impossible over time have made studies on biodiesel obtained fram vegetable and animal origin oils which are renewable and have no problem of being exhausted. As a result, it has been found that biodiesel can be used in diesel engines without any modification. Considering the environmental costs and disposal costs of animal waste oils, it is desirable to convert them to biodiesel fuel. In this study, biodiesel fuel was obtained by performing some operations on leather industry waste oil obtained from Bursa Leather Specialized Organized Industrial Zone. The engine performance, exhaust emissions and combustion characteristics of biodiesel blends obtained by mixing biodiesel with 10% and 30% petroleum based diesel fuel were analyzed and compared with reference diesel fuel. Following these tests, it was determined that maximum heat release and maximum cylinder pressure were high due to long ignition delays of biodiesel blends. In addition, thermal efficiency and moment values decreased with increasing biodiesel ratio. Some increase in NOx emissions, soot emission values were decreased in biodiesel blends.
