Is the rate of muscle damage after the depth jump protocol affected by body weight?

Abstract (EN)
This study was conducted to evaluate whether muscle damage following the depth jump (Drop Jump) protocol differs in individuals with different body weights. 50 healthy individuals over the age of 18 participated in the study. The participants were divided into 2 groups as normal weight (20.50±1.84) and overweight (26.34±2.59). The exercise protocol consisted of 5 sets of 20 repetitions of a total of 100 jumps from a 60 cm high box; 10 seconds of rest was given between jumps and 2 minutes of rest was given after every 20 jumps. In the analysis of data, Shapiro-Wilk (S-W) test was used to test normality and skewness-kurtosis coefficients of -2,+2 (George and Mallery, 2010) were taken as reference. It was determined that the data did not conform to a normal distribution. Mann-Whitney-U analysis was used for comparisons between groups. Since significant differences were detected between the groups in CK-NAC pre-test values, comparisons were made between the groups based on CK-NAC percentage change rates in PE and IAE, PE and 24s and 24s and IAE values. Spearman Correlation test was used to examine the correlation between continuous variables. Effect size for Mann Whitney U Test was calculated by dividing Z value by the square root of sample size (George, D. and Mallery, P., 2010). According to the findings; significant differences were detected in LDH-IAE (p<0.05) and LDH 24s values (p<0.05). It was determined that LDH levels of the overweight BMI group were significantly higher in IAE and 24s. Since there was a significant difference in CK-NAC-PE values, comparisons were made on the change rates. Significant differences were found in CK-NAC/PE % change rate (p<0.05), CK-NAC/IAE % change rate (p<0.05) and CK-NAC/24s % change rate values (p<0.05). It was found that the CK-NAC% change rate levels of the overweight BMI group were significantly higher in PE, IAE and 24s. According to the correlation analysis results; a positive significant relationship was found between body weight and CK—NAC-IAE (r=.533; p<.000), body weight and CK-NAC-24s (r=.447; p<.001), body weight and LDH-IAE (r=.442; p<.001) and body weight and LDH-24s (r=.296; p<.037). Similarly, positive significant correlations were found between BMI and CK-NAC-IAE (r=.481; p<.000) and BMI and CK-NAC-24s (r=.464; p<.001), between BMI and LDH-PE (r=.306; p<.031), between BMI and LDH-IAE (r=.478; p<.000) and between BMI and LDH-24s (r=.324; p<.022). As a result, it can be said that the depth jump protocol does not create equal muscle damage in individuals with different body weights and this method does not create similar exercise intensity in groups with different body weights.
