Occupation and title names in the "Derleme Sözlüğü" database

The concept of profession has been used throughout history to refer to the names of occupations through which people earn their livelihood. In addition to providing a means of sustenance, professions also carry traces of solidarity, service, and social order in daily life. Title names, on the other hand, have been used either to denote a profession or to indicate a rank, position, or status. The aim of this study is to determine the diversity and richness of the use of profession and title names in the dialects of Turkish spoken in Turkey. The study has been structured using the document analysis method, one of the qualitative research techniques. No new text corpus was compiled for this study; instead, data from the Derleme Sözlüğü (Compilation Dictionary), published online by the Türk Dil Kurumu, were examined. These data were individually reviewed, and all profession and title names found in the database were recorded. The identified profession and title names were classified according to their structure, conceptual fields, and origins, with reference to their sources. Primarily, profession and title names were categorized under two main headings based on the number of words in their structure: "Single-Word Names" and "Multi-Word Names." As a second step, they were analyzed according to the suffixes present in their structure. In addition to Turkish, examples from 11 different languages were identified in the use of profession and title names. The language with the highest number of examples in the origin classification was Turkish, with 502 identified profession and title names of Turkish origin. Arabic ranked second, with 141 examples. In the study, profession and title names were classified into 27 categories based on their conceptual fields. Some of these categories were further divided into subcategories.
