Analysis of Angelopoulos's "Triology of Border" films in the light of Derrida's "Ghost" concept

The French philosopher Jacques Derrida mentions about "deconstruction" philosophy which is known as a critical reading method against Western metaphysics. Derrida gives new meaning to the concepts by disrupting the systematic of semantics that proceeds over the oppositions with this method. Derrida's method, which is evaluated in the linguistic is confronted with the accusation that he focuses only on literary texts and ignores ethical-political issues. In the light of the criticisms, it is seen that Derrida cares about these issues after the 1990s. Derrida said that deconstruction was related to ethical-political issues from the very beginning. Considering the impact of the concepts created in the philosophy of his early period in the literature, it should be given the right to him. The text of Specters of Marx is a product through such a thought which was written in 1993 by Derrida. In this text which Derrida is inspired by William Shakespeare's Hamlet, the ghosts are used for a strong metaphor between existance and absence. The ghost oscillates between existence and absence, it has no glance, disrupts the progression of straight time line. It overturns the limits of previous space, glance and life. Ghosts do these all to tell you that somethings wrong and to demand that justice has to be served. For these reasons we have to listen to these ghosts. Derrida find that "justice" is the only concept that can not be deconstructed so when it comes to justice he offers to use 'hauntology' instead of ontology. Derrida writes Specters of Marx against the society who thinks that liberalism defeats Marxism because of the cold war ends against the socialist states and accepts it as a death of Marks's. While starvation and misery wanders around the world, the blessing of the existence of "capitalism" by some people is considered unacceptable by Derrida. Moreover, he does not refrain from claiming that the fanatics who dogmatized Marx's ideas had a share in this obituary. There are also autobiographical elements that make the philosopher think about ghosts, such as the deaths of his close friends and the fact that he learnt he has fatal illness. Director Theodoros Angelopoulos focuses on similar themes in his three films, which were collected under the title of "border trilogy" in the 1990s, when Specters of Ghosts were designed, written and discussed. The loss of the people of his generation and the poverty caused by the bloody wars in the Balkan geography which he belongs, makes it clear that the traces of the ghosts mentioned by Derrida can be found in the Angelopoulos cinema. In this thesis, the place of the ghosts is questioned by discourse analysis in three films (border triology) of Theodoros Angelopoulos, which is based on the hauntology proposed by the French philosopher Jacques Derrida in Specters of Ghost. In this thesis based on Derrida's Specters of Ghosts which is enriched with literary and psychoanalytic texts in a historical context, it is inevitable to benefit from context analysis and at the same time. In addition, visual culture studies were used in evaluating the films of Angelopolus, which contributed to visual culture.
