Understandings of drawing and its reflections in contemporary art, and drawing as a form of expression

A line at its simplest is defined as a path between two points; it is the simplest means of expressing a thought visually and is the primary element of drawing. Cave drawings are considered to be the beginning of art and are the first documented records of drawing in history. This journey, starting from a line, has gone through several stages until reaching a point of transformation: from a language of expression to the language of art. In this context, drawing, whose meaning was formerly comprised of its use in preliminary phases—such as sketching and drafting—by the artist, has become acknowledged as a separate art discipline. Throughout this historical process, the journey of the line has become the artist's own individual journey, and drawing is currently used in many areas of contemporary art with a multidisciplinary understanding. Drawing, within its own discipline, can generally be separated by line, spot and tonality; and, using all these techniques together, drawing has a characteristic that allows it to develop new, creative techniques. With every artist developing drawing within their own unique language of expression, it may also be acknowledged to be the artist's quickest means of conveying their thoughts. The status and importance of drawing in art have changed in parallel to the ever-changing perception of art from the classical era to contemporary art. Drawing has left the limits of the paper's face, and has started to be used in several multidisciplinary areas, such as spatial design, digital fields and light installations; it has attained new worth as a means of expression with its allowance for endless creations to the contemporary art and artist.
