In this thesis, the design and experimental implementation of a direct bipolar buck single-to-single-phase matrix converter (SSMC) were studied. A novel control method for SSMCs that improves the performance parameters such as voltage transfer ratio (VTR), output voltage total harmonic distortion (THD), and input current THD was suggested. Secondly, a synchronization algorithm was developed that synchronizes the triggering signals of the power semiconductors with the grid regardless of the synthesized output frequency. Thirdly, the effects of four different carrier-based pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques (sinusoidal PWM, multiple PWM, staircase PWM, and trapezoidal PWM) on the performance parameters of the SSMC were compared in terms of VTR, output voltage THD, output current THD, and input current THD. The simulation and experimental studies were carried out under the conditions when the output frequency is lower, equal, and higher to the input frequency. According to the experimental results, the proposed control method increases the VTR by around 10% and decreases the output voltage THD and input current THD by around 34% and 54%, respectively, for all output frequencies.
